Pink pincushion know-nothings

OK I officially hate Abigail Breslin who starred in Little Miss Sunshine. Not only is she wearing a giant pink pincushion thing at the Oscars, she also just set a total anti-geek girl example. Jaden Smith from the Pursuit of Happyness just asked her what her dad did, and she said, “computer systems analyst.” And Jaden responded, “but what does he do?” and she said, “I have no idea.” Which got a really feeble laugh from the audience. Dammit, Abigail, you SHOULD know what your dad does!

Well, in her defense, I don’t think either my daughter or my son have any idea what I do on the computer. I’m not sure at what age that kind of awareness kicks in, but I didn’t understand computing until high school, and I don’t think I really had an appreciation for what kind of work my parents did until I was out in the workforce myself!

And of course those lines were undoubtedly written by a grown-up. :(

But I didn’t know the detail of what my dad does when I was her age….

C’mon, it was scripted, give the girl a break.

It’s hard to believe that such a hate-filled, mean-spirited post would be on shessuchageek.

I’m sure it was scripted, but it still made me annoyed at everyone involved. She and Smith were both scripted as being precocious, smart kids who are seasoned show biz performers, not as “regular” kids. The implication was that she has no idea what her dad really does because it’s guy stuff.

be annoyed at her handlers and show-biz pushy family, not at her. she’s a kid. a kid who’s already other people’s meal ticket. c.f. britney spears.

I have to say that I think there’s even more to dislike about her. In the movie, she was this totally great character who was comfortable with herself even though she didn’t have the perfect body and didn’t fit in. In reality, though, the tummy she had in the movie was a fat suit and she’s always glammed up when you see her elsewhere. It’s disappointing that they couldn’t find a little girl who actually had a belly or embraced being different.

  8. Channel Marker — The IT Channel Weblog » Academy fails girls in technology via Abigail Breslin Says:

[…] Educate your daughters, wives, nieces and moms. I don’t want any of the women in your life getting up in front of a glamorous Oscar audience, like Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin, to make women look tech-clueless. On Sunday, Breslin admitted that she didn’t know what her father, a computer systems analyst, did for a living. The Academy should be ashamed for writing a script like that just for a laugh. Contributors at my new favorite girl technology blog, She’s Such a Geek, agree. […]

I had NO IDEA what my dad did until I went to work for the same company out of college. He was an engineer and he never talked about it. Abigail probably would not have been aware that he was a “computer systems analyst” until she read the script either - that is just not in a kid’s daily vocabulary. I am a computer systems analyst and my husband doesn’t know what that is - he just refers to me as a computer geek.
For the record, I really liked her dress!

My kids not only don’t know what I do, they don’t want to know, and they take the piss out of me for it. My daughter is much better at maths than I ever was at school and is about to do a med studies degree at uni. What my son doesn’t know about myspace isn’t worth knowing. Go figure
